Pruning Shrubs –

pruning of shrubs.

Planning Your Day –
Jose de la Cruz, Owner, Potomac Springs Landscape, Springfield, Va. Jose will discuss how to plan your
day to save time and have your jobsite run smoothly.

Loading Your Trailer Correctly – Manuel Martinez, CLT,

Tree and Landscape Pest Walk – Stanton Gill, Extension Specialist IPM, Central MD Research and Education Center, University of Md, and Karen Rane, Director University of MD Plant Diagnostic Lab, College Park, Md. Learn to diagnose the
insect, disease and cultural problems you see while walking the landscape with Karen and Stanton.

Tree Preservation – Ed Milhous, Registered Certified Arborist, Owner, Trees Please, Haymarket, Va. From hardscapes to skyscrapers, you need to consider your trees to minimize damage.

American University Arboretum and Gardens Tour - Mike Mastrota, and H. Paul Davis, Landscape Architects, American University. Tour the Arboretum that encompasses the
grounds of the campus with the architects responsible for the design.

9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.
Drainage Systems, Where and Why – Grove Teats, President, Alpine Services, Gaithersburg, Md. Learn when a drainage system is necessary and what is the best choice for the site.

10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
The Use Of Tropicals In The Landscape – Joe Somone, Horticulturist, McFall & Berry Landscape. Joe will share his experience and demonstrate putting together containers using tropicals for the landscape.

11:00 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.
Green Roof Design, Plant Selection, and Maintenance– Wayne Mills, President, Wayne’s Wholesale Nursery, Fairfax, Va. Greg Long, Capitol Green Roofs, and Mark Feist, Asst Director Facilities Management, American University. Learn about green roofs and the plants used from a premier grower and installer, and AU’s maintenance experience with their green roof.

11:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.
Which One Is The Weed?? – John Willis, Research Associate, Turfgrass Weed Science, VA Tech, Blacksburg, Va. John will go over weed identification in the landscape and point out the difference between some of the grasslike weeds and perennials.

12:15 p.m. - 1:15 p.m.

1:15 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
The Effects Of Water Quality On Irrigation and Drought Management Of Plants - Jeff Michel, M & M Consulting, Warrenton, Va. Can drought be managed with irrigation and what difference does the quality of water make? Come hear Jeff share his years of water management experience with how it relates to plant health.

Miscellaneous Details

  • Please check in at the Registration Desk for your Field Day packet including detailed maps for the day's sessions and tradeshow, a list of tradeshow exhibitors and your nametag.

  • Registration will open at 7:00 a.m. Please check-in for your packet.

  • Coffee and doughnuts will be served in the tradeshow area during registration.

  • Hear Bluegrass Music in the tradeshow during lunch.

  • VNLA credits available.

  • Tree Sessions qualify for ISA CEU's. You must sign-in at each session.



Directions

American University, 4400 Massachusetts Ave. NW, Washington DC 20016

American University is at the intersection of Massachusetts and Nebraska Avenues (Ward Circle) in Northwest Washington, DC. It can be found in ADC's Street Map of Washington DC and is easily accessible by car or Metro. Plenty of free parking.

Metro: Take the Red Line to the Tenleytown/AU stop. AU provides a free shuttle to the campus. Directions to the shuttle are posted at the metro.

Car from MD: Take I-495 (Capital Beltway) to exit 39 (near the American Legion Bridge). Follow signs for River Road East (MD Rt. 190 E.). Go to the fifth traffic light and turn right onto Goldsboro Rd. (MD Rt. 614). At the first light, turn left onto Mass. Ave. (MD Rt. 396). Continue on Mass. Ave. to the second traffic circle (Ward Circle). Take the first right off Ward Circle onto Nebraska Ave. and look for the parking lot on your left.

Car from VA: Take I-495 (Capital Beltway) to exit for 123 North (Tysons Corner area). Continue on 123N to the end. Turn left and cross Chain Bridge. Go right at end of bridge onto Canal Rd. for approximately 1/4 mile to traffic light (Arizona Ave.) Go left onto Arizona, and continue to T intersection at Nebraska Ave. Go right onto Nebraska to second light. Look for parking lot on the right.
