PGMS Salutes Grounds Management Excellence
Urban University Grounds Lead the Way

The Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) has recognized 39 grounds management programs for excellence in the Society's 2007 Green Star Awards Competition. The 35th Annual Awards were presented in Louisville, Ky. during PGMS' School of Grounds Managementl held October 24-27 in conjunction with the GIE+Expo.

This awards program brings national recognition to grounds maintained with a high degree of excellence. The Green Star Competition complements other national landscape award programs that recognize outstanding landscape design and construction.

This year's program acknowledged the nation's top grounds in settings ranging from hospitals to resorts to universities. Overall, PGMS presented 19 Grand Awards, its highest honor, as well as 20 Honor Awards in fourteen categories of competition.

Seven of the total award winners were in the Urban University Grounds Category. Columbia University in New York City, American University in Washington, D.C. and the University of Texas at Austin all took home Grand Awards. They were joined by the following Honor Award winners in this category: University of Pittsburgh; University of Nevada Las Vegas; University of Alberta in Canada and Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz.

PGMS presented a Grand Award in the Small Site Category to Kluge Children's Rehabilitation Center in Charlottesville, Va. as well as a Grand Award in the Government Building or Complex Category to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.

PGMS presented four Grand Awards and an Honor Award in the Hospital or Institution Category. Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia, S.C., University of Virginia Health System Physical Plant in Charlottesville, The Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii and Waverly Heights Ltd. in Gladwyne, Pa. were bestowed with Grand Awards. Located in Covington, La., St. Tammany Parish Hospital was an Honor Award recipient.

Progressive Insurance in Mayfield Village, Ohio was recognized with a Grand Award in the Industrial, Commercial Site or Office Park Category. Abbott Park in Abbott, Ill. received an Honor Award in the same category. An Honor Award in the Public Works Site Category went to the City of Milwaukee, Wis. for outstanding maintenance for their boulevard landscapes.

PGMS presented two Grand Awards and two Honor Awards in its Park, Recreation Area or Playground Category. The City of Henderson in Nevada received an award for Mission Hills Park and the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C. received the other Grand Award. The City of Farmers Branch received an honor award for Don Showman Park and the City of Henderson captured the other honor award for Anthem Hills Park.

PGMS also presented one Grand Award and two Honor Awards in its Condominium or Apartment Complex Category. Located in Charlotte, N.C., Post Uptown Place was honored with a Grand Award. Post Midtown Square in Houston, Texas and Post Lindbergh in Atlanta, Ga. both received honor awards.

Also saluted with Grand Awards were Grand Geneva Resort & Spa in Lake Geneva, Wis. and the Inn of Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C. in the Hotel, Motel or Resort Category.

The University of Miami/Unicco won the sole Grand Award in the Athletic Fields Category. Three others received Honor Awards in this field including: Pomona College in Claremont, Calif., Bell Gardens Sports Center in Bell Gardens, Calif. and the City of Henderson-Arroyo Grande Complex in Nevada.

Winner of the Grand Award in the Professional Fields Category was Surprise Recreation Campus in Surprise, Ariz. The City of Bell Gardens in California received an Honor Award for the Bell Gardens Golf Course in the Golf Course Category.

PGMS presented a Grand Award and an Honor Award in the School Grounds Category. Cincinnati State Technical & Community College in Ohio received the Grand Award while Gwinnett Technical College in Lawrenceville, Ga. received the Honor Award.

A Grand Award and four Honor Awards were presented in the University and College Grounds Category. The College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio received the sole Grand Award. Honor Award recipients include: The University of Virginia in Charlottesville; Texas Tech University in Lubbock; Texas Woman's University in Denton; and Penn State Delaware County in Media, Pa.

Founded in 1911, PGMS is an individual membership society of grounds professionals advancing the grounds management profession through education and professional development. The Green Star Awards program brings national recognition to grounds maintained with a high degree of excellence. The program complements other national landscape award programs that recognize outstanding landscape design and construction.
