PGMS Salutes Grounds Management Excellence
College and University Grounds Lead the Way

The Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) has recognized 16 grounds management programs for excellence in the Society's 2003 Green Star Awards Competition. The 31st Annual Awards were presented in St. Louis, Mo., during PGMS' Professional Grounds Management School held in conjunction with the Green Industry Exposition.

This awards program brings national recognition to grounds maintained with a high degree of excellence. The program complements other national landscape award programs that recognize outstanding landscape design and construction.

This year's program acknowledged the nation's top grounds in settings ranging from

shopping areas to apartment complexes to universities. Overall, PGMS presented five Grand Awards, its highest honor, as well as 11 Honor Awards in eight categories of competition. Seven of the total award winners were in the School or University Grounds Category. University of Arkansas - Fort Smith was at the head of this class taking home a Grand Award. They were joined by the following Honor Award winners in this category: Multnomah Bible College & Biblical Seminary; Texas Tech University; University of Pittsburgh; University of Texas at Austin; Western Michigan University; and Western Oregon University.

PGMS presented two Grand Awards in the Condominium, Apartment Complex, or Planned Community Category. The first was given to the Dorchester Towers Roof Garden in Arlington, Va. The second Honor Award in this competition was bestowed upon Post Ridge Apartment Homes in Atlanta, Ga.

Winner of the PGMS Grand Award in the Industrial or Office Park competition was Abbott Laboratories in Abbott Park, Ill. The remaining Grand Award recipient was Longaberger Homestead® of Newark, Ohio in the Shopping Area Category.

PGMS also presented two Honor Awards in its Park, Recreation Area or Athletic Field competition. Located in Normal, Ill., the Illinois State University Redbird Baseball Field was honored in this category, as was Lubbers Stadium at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich.

The University of Virginia Health System of Charlottesville, Va. was recognized with an Honor Award in the Hospital or Institution Category.

Located in Orrville, Ohio, the Mennonite Mutual Insurance Company grounds received recognition with an Honor Award in the Small Site Category. Also saluted with an Honor Award was Renaissance Pine Isle Resort of Sugar Hill, Ga. in the Hotel, Motel or Resort Category.
