One
of the highlights of the 2004 PGMS School of Grounds Management
was Michael Mongon, CGMs presentation, Top Ten Image
Enhancements. During his presentation, Mongon, golf course
superintendent of the Fairveiw Country Club in Greenwich, Conn.,
focused on how make a better impression and enhance your value to
your organization and in the career marketplace. He specifically
detailed ways grounds professionals can reinvent themselves at their
present position. Below is a quick look at his list of top image
enhancers. Are you taking advantage of these?
10) WORKING
RELATIONSHIP WITH STAFF
You
dont have to trek through the jungles of the Amazon or climb
the Grand Tetons toghether to develop a strong working relationship
with your staff. Simple measures, such as attending education programs
together, having a team lunch once a week, holding staff meetings,
and hosting social activities speak volumes.
9)
EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION
Participating in certification programs or attending education seminars
not only expands your cranium capacity, but increases your value
as an employee. Staying current with industry standards makes you
more efficient and networking in seminars allows you to learn from
others struggles and mistakes.
8) STAFF
APPEARANCE
You never get another chance to make a first impression. And overcoming
a negative first impression is like digging yourself out of quicksand.
Make sure you and your staff are dressed and groomed in a manner
that leaves an impression of a well-organizaed and well-informed
team of professionals! Remember, your staff is an extension of your
leadership. And if you havent been taking advantage of these
first impressions, just take heart in the fact we are always making
first impressions.
7)
DISPLAYING RESPECT AND APPRECIATION OF OTHERS!
Lets face it - everyone likes to be treated with respect and
have their efforts appreciated. This is especially true in todays
world where this is often the exception rather than the norm. Because
of this, individuals who show a respect and appreciation of others
leave a lasting impression on those around them. Also, sending a
thank you note or e-mail does not take much time or effort, but
could lead to a job referral or other reference of value later on
down the road.
6) PARTICIPATION
IN CIVIC ACTIVITIES
You only get what you give. Give back to your community and reap
the benefits that come with it. Anybody can do it and there is plenty
to do. Get involved in area youth sports either as a coach or referee,
lend a helping hand to the church bake sale, or join a civic society
such as the Knights of Columbus or Lions Club. This will strengthen
your community and its view of the organization you work for. In
turn, this increases your value in your employers eyes.
Right
now you may be thinking to yourself, Hey, I though this was
a Top Ten list. Whats going on? Dont
worry it is. We will be discussing the top five image enhancements
from in the May/June issue of PGMS Forum. Meanwhile, make
sure you are implementing the five image enhancers mentioned above
to continue reinventing your career and professional standing.
