performed by contractors for compliance with plans and specifications;
reviewing budget needs and preparing operating budget; and interviewing,
selecting, assigning, training, evaluating work of, and disciplining
employees. There

UNIVERSITY Maintains, operates, and manages the Indiana University Championship and Par 3 golf courses and the intercollegiate golf team’s practice facility. Submits written plans for construction, renovation, and/or reconstruction of such properties, whether performed by maintenance staff or outside contractors. Prepares and monitors annual budgets for the maintenance and capital improvement of properties. Interviews, hires, trains, and supervises a staff of employees for the purpose of maintaining the properties. Acquires equipment and supplies to maintain the properties, ensures inventory control, and oversees the equipment maintenance programs. Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in agronomy, turf management, or related
field and three years experience in golf course maintenance/management
or comparable experience required. Must have knowledge of all tools
and machinery necessary for golf course management, including tractors,
mowers, sod cutting tools, etc. Knowledge of current federal, state,
and local laws and regulations affecting the management of golf
course operations, including employment, safety, and environmental
standards; laws; and regulations required. Must have a valid driver’s
license. Extensive experience supervising a grounds crew or golf
course maintenance crew preferred.

THE
CLIFFS COMMUNITIES The
Superintendent will be responsible for the day-to-day management
and maintenance of the golf facility at a given community. The scope
of these responsibilities will include; but not be limited to: staff
management, working within a budget, equipment maintenance, and
turf and Irrigation systems. The Superintendent will provide a world-class
golf course for the members and prospective property owners (working
with the Club General Manager, Head Golf Professional and real estate
sales team) in each development that is in keeping with the highest
standards of excellence established by the Cliffs Communities. JOB
DUTIES: • Interact with Members and guests, responding to complaints/concerns,
answering questions and attending golf committee meetings. •
Select and hire golf maintenance staff to meet the current needs
of the department. • Supervise staff in determining the need
for irrigation, seeding and fertilization rates, sod cutting, cutting
turf grass on fairways, tees, greens, and roughs; raking sand traps.
• Ensure staff provides for the proper care and cultivation
of shrubs, trees, and flowers; pruning, trimming and spraying. Supervise
application of pesticides, fertilizers, fungicides, and insecticides
to treat the course. • Oversee repairs of broken lines or valves
for water systems, and may perform necessary repairs in times of
emergency. Also assist in the planning and development of new irrigation
systems, including redesigns and modifications of existing irrigation
systems. • Ensure all golf maintenance staff members are trained
in the proper operation, care, and maintenance of equipment. Supervise
maintenance and repair on assigned vehicles and equipment. •
Address staff issues in a proper manner. • May, on occasion,
perform necessary general grounds maintenance work when understaffed.
• Maintain detailed records of personnel, equipment used, supplies,
and schedules indicating application of fertilizers, sprays, etc.,
and their use for each season. • Keep daily records of course
activities such as fertilizing, cutting cups, spraying, etc. and
assist in preparing reports reflecting total hours of personnel
and equipment used. • Prepare annual budget reflecting necessary
and requested expenditures. • Process all invoices to be paid
in a timely manner. • Identify problems and make recommendations
for course maintenance to management. BACKGROUND/EXPERIENCE: •
Bachelors degree in Turf Management or Agronomy or a related field
and/or a combination of experience • 3-5+ yrs turf management
experience in a supervisory or lead capacity, or any equivalent
combination of education and experience • Class “A”
Certification preferred • Must achieve Certified Pesticide
Applicators License within 6 mos. of hire • Considerable knowledge
in methods, equipment, and materials used in maintaining a golf
course; good knowledge of general repair and maintenance procedures;
good knowledge of practices and principles of effective supervision;
considerable knowledge of mixing and administering chemicals used
in treating turf; considerable knowledge of automatic irrigation
systems. • Strong communication skills • Sound financial
and budget, leadership/management, organizational and record-keeping
skills • Knowledge of the game of golf and its rules •
Ability to delegate responsibilities, supervise, and train employees
• Must be able to identify pest threats on the golf course
• Must possess a valid driver’s license PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Demonstrated experience and working knowledge of OSHA standards
and other environmental safety standards, as applied to chemicals
and compounds • Must have sufficient physical strength and
ability to independently and repeatedly lift, move, and carry objects
weighing up to 50 pounds and to repeatedly lift, move, and carry
objects weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance • Ability
to walk 2-5 miles per day • The employee will frequently bend,
squat, twist, crouch, push, pull, lift, and carry, stand, and walk.
• Work is performed outdoors while exposed to dampness, fumes,
odors, dust, dirt, rain, sleet, snow, heat, chemicals, machinery
with moving parts, loud noise, and irrigated water. • This
position requires physical endurance during periods of extreme weather
conditions.

DISTINGUISHING
CHARACTERISTICS: ESSENTIAL DUTIES: The following duties are typical of those performed by the Grounds Specialist. - Confers
with the Director of Facilities Services, Athletics' Director and
coaches to determine athletic fields needs and scheduled use, including
lining and marking, grading pitching mounds, dragging infields and
ensuring that goal posts, nets, pitching cages and other equipment
are in place. Maintains all fields to meet the intercollegiate levels
of competition set forth by the standards of the Commission on Athletics. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge

in: Other Requirements: Must possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record; must be willing to respond to off-hours emergency situations. ILLUSTRATIVE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A typical way to obtain the above knowledge and skill is a combination of education and experience equivalent to: Completion of high school or equivalent and two years of responsible groundskeeping experience. Additional coursework in horticulture, versatile turf management or grounds keeping is desirable. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: The physical abilities involved in the performance of essential duties are: Strength
and stamina to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 90 pounds;
ability to work above ground on ladders; agility, strength and manual
dexterity to operate a variety of hand and power tools, vehicles
