Overall management includes planning, organizing, assigning and reviewing the work of subordinates engaged in the operation, improvement, development and maintenance of an eighteen-hole golf course and its facilities; establishing and enforcing rules of conduct for employees, and rules and regulations governing the use of the course and other facilities; planning, directing and coordinating work to insure that the course as well as the buildings, grounds and equipment located thereon are properly maintained or improved; directing the proper use and timely application of fertilizers, soil supplements and conditioners, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides and other chemicals; supervising the construction, reconstruction and/or renovation of greens, tees, and sand bunkers; inspecting construction projects performed by contractors for compliance with plans and specifications; reviewing budget needs and preparing operating budget; and interviewing, selecting, assigning, training, evaluating work of, and disciplining employees.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from high school. Responsible work experience that demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Three years of supervisory experience in golf course maintenance and/or operations activities.

Such experience must have shown the demonstrated ability to plan, organize, assign and review the work of subordinates engaged in the operation, improvement and maintenance of a golf course.

License Requirement:
Valid Hawaii State driver's license (Type 3), prior to appointment.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Petaluma Campus of Santa Rosa Junior College is seeking a qualified individual with demonstrated grounds maintenance and gardening skills to join an outstanding team of staff. This is a full-time, 12 months per year Classified position. Generally, the hours of employment will be 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, but work schedules may vary, so candidates must have scheduling flexibility to meet the changing needs of the department. The Petaluma Campus is located in Petaluma, approximately 17 miles south of the Santa Rosa Campus. Appointments are contingent upon funding and Board approval.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, perform grounds maintenance and gardening work; may supervise the work of student assistants; and perform related work as required.

DEPARTMENT AND CAMPUS DESCRIPTION
The Facilities Operations Department is responsible for building and grounds repair and maintenance, fleet management, energy management, custodial services, and coordination and oversight of District-wide repair, remodel, and new construction projects (these responsibilities encompass all District-wide sites and properties). The department is organized into four separate divisions: Buildings and Equipment Maintenance, Grounds, Custodial, and Administration, and consists of approximately 55 full-time staff.
SRJC began offering evening classes in Petaluma in 1964, and in the early 1970s held classes in leased spaces throughout the city. In 1985, the Board of Trustees purchased a 40-acre site in east Petaluma, and in 1995 the ?rst phase of construction of a Petaluma Center was completed. The Petaluma Center officially became a campus in April 1999. Today, over 6000 students enroll in classes each semester at the SRJC Petaluma Campus, and the second phase of construction to expand the Petaluma Campus to a 12,000-student capacity is nearing completion. The beautiful contemporary adobe style buildings with red tile roofs and clock tower with Westminster chimes re?ect the Spanish history of the area. The campus is 35 miles north of San Francisco.

SCOPE
The Groundskeeper I performs various groundskeeping duties of moderate complexity; may assist in training of student assistants.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Abilities and Knowledge:
Ability to operate hand and power tools used in gardening and groundskeeping work safely; perform skilled grounds maintenance work; perform physical labor; follow and give oral and written instructions; work safely and effectively around the public; maintain cooperative working relationships; demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for, a diverse population.
Knowledge of methods, supplies, equipment and tools used in planting, cultivating, and caring for lawns, shrubs, annuals and perennials, and trees; plant identification and cultivation requirements; plant pest/disease problems; installation and repair of irrigation systems (drip and automatic); and programming of irrigation time clocks.

Required Education/Experience:
Graduation from high school AND one year of full-time (or part-time equivalent) gardening and groundskeeping duties; OR the equivalent.

Preferred: Experience maintaining large grounds.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to, lifting heavy items (up to 50 lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing or walking. Frequently required to work under inclement weather conditions. Must be able to work in an environment containing frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must be able to operate a variety of gas powered equipment and sharpen hand tools safely.
This classification requires the use of a personal or District vehicle while conducting District business. Must possess a valid (Class C) California driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
Preferred: Qualified Applicator Certificate issued by California Department of Pesticide Regulation.

COMPENSATION PACKAGE
# Salary Range: $3,167 - $3,852 per month (2007/08 Salary Schedule); maximum initial placement at $3,493 per month (placement within this range is based on assessment of previous experience as documented in application materials).

GROUNDSKEEPER SPECIALIST

DEFINITION:

Under general supervision maintains and prepares athletic fields for instruction and team use; performs skilled gardening, landscaping, grounds maintenance and other duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This job is distinguished from other grounds and groundskeeper jobs by its focus on technical preparation, care and maintenance of athletic fields. This position may take a lead role when necessary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: The following duties are typical of those performed by the Grounds Specialist.

- Confers with the Director of Facilities Services, Athletics' Director and coaches to determine athletic fields needs and scheduled use, including lining and marking, grading pitching mounds, dragging infields and ensuring that goal posts, nets, pitching cages and other equipment are in place. Maintains all fields to meet the intercollegiate levels of competition set forth by the standards of the Commission on Athletics.
- Maintains landscaping and athletic area, ensures that the sports facilities are prepared for scheduled athletic events;
- Seeds or installs sod, fertilizes, mows, trims, edges, fertilizes, aerates, thatches lawns, athletic fields and other assigned areas.
- Installs, adjusts and maintains sprinkler systems piping, wiring and controls;
- Picks up/sweeps/blows grounds, walkways and other surfaces; empties and cleans waste receptacles; disposes of waste and debris;
- Prepares athletic fields according to specifications for competition.
- Prunes, trims, and shapes shrubs and trees; clears brush and removes dead or diseased trees and shrubs;
- Weed and rodent non-chemical abatement.
- Operates tractors, trenchers, trucks, backhoes, all types of hand/ride on lawn mowers and large /small hand powered tools.
- Builds and maintains fences, outdoor handrails, and other basic maintenance incidental to landscaping and grounds;
- Maintains roads and pathways in such a manner that provides safe ingress and egress for students, staff and facility;
- Ensures safety of worksites, utilize proper safety equipment and related safe work practices; corrects or notifies others of safety issues and needed repairs, etc.;
- Maintains supply inventory and initiates replacement and restocking of needed grounds supplies; maintains logs and records of work performed;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:
Methods and techniques for athletic field's maintenance, care and preparation for athletic events.
Lawn and athletic fields seeding, fertilizing, aerating, mowing and edging.
Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in grounds/landscaping maintenance.
Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the installation and maintenance of sprinkler and sprinkler control systems.
Safe working practices.

Skill in:
Maintaining athletic fields to meet the required levels for intercollegiate competition.
Mowing, edging, trimming, pruning, turf maintenance, sprinklers ,controls installation and repair.
Performing preventative and repair maintenance on landscaping / grounds tools and equipment.
Reading and interpreting labeled instructions, lay out diagrams, blue prints, maps and specifications.
Safe working practices related to chemicals, tools and equipment.

Other Requirements:

Must possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record; must be willing to respond to off-hours emergency situations.

ILLUSTRATIVE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A typical way to obtain the above knowledge and skill is a combination of education and experience equivalent to:

Completion of high school or equivalent and two years of responsible groundskeeping experience. Additional coursework in horticulture, versatile turf management or grounds keeping is desirable.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: The physical abilities involved in the performance of essential duties are:

Strength and stamina to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 90 pounds; ability to work above ground on ladders; agility, strength and manual dexterity to operate a variety of hand and power tools, vehicles and equipment; work outdoors in temperature extremes and inclement weather; vision to read work requests, blueprints and diagrams, manuals, and regulations;
Speech and hearing for communicating instructions, information, and work requests. This work is performed primarily in an outdoor setting.
