PGMS
Philadelphia Branch Visits Morris Arboretum
Twenty-five
members of the Philadelphia Branch of PGMS were treated to a behind
the scenes look at Morris Arboretum this October. Morris Arboretum
Education Coordinator, Jan McFarlan, described the scope of the
arboretum's programs and highlighted the educational programs Morris
offers to professionals in the Green Industry. Scott Guiser, Sr.
Extension Educator from Penn State, provided an update on seasonal
pests. After lunch, we toured the arboretum grounds, lead by Jason
Lubar, Directory of Urban Forestry, Louise Clarke, Horticulturist
and Tony Aiello, Director of Horticulture.
A highlight
of the tour was being "Out on a Limb." This feature of
the arboretum allows visitors to walk among the tree tops more than
50 feet above ground and get a tree-top view of the world. It was
quite windy that day and we were amazed to see the trunk movement
of a 250 year old oak from that height. Other highlights included
the Dawn Redwood Grove, which has some of the first Redwood plantings
in the U.S., established in the late 1940's.
Thanks
to Kevin O'Donnell, Grounds Superintendent from Villanova University
and past PGMS President, for arranging this excellent event. Morris
Arboretum should be on every grounds managers "to do"
list. To get more information about the arboretum and their educational
programs go to: morrisarboretum.org.
