PGMS Philadelphia Branch Enjoyed Spring Site Visit

The event at Lincoln Financial Field "The Link" and the Nova Care practice facility that took place Thurs. April 30, 2009 was a hit. About 35 turf managers and professionals from the region’s prominent schools, businesses and municipalities gathered together for a rare, behind the scenes look at the inner workings of what it takes to maintain a multi-use professional football stadium and practice facility. Tony Leonard, Director of Grounds and Dan Schemesh, Assistant Sports Field Manager led the tours and discussions throughout the day.

Their in-depth knowledge and expertise was apparent while explaining the complex system used to keep the playing surface safe and playable at "The Link," even under the most adverse conditions.

The bent grass was just starting to pop while site visit attendees were there. They discussed the benefits of using warm season turf at the Link due to its resilience and the timing of use that Stadium receives. There are summer concerts, Pro Soccer, Div. 1 College football on Saturday’s followed by Pro Games on Sunday. It keeps the grounds crew hopping, but they do a phenomenal job!

The magnificent cool season turf at Nova Care is a testament to their dedication and hard work. It’s so thick and healthy, they haven’t needed to use herbicides to control weeds for over three years!

All in all, it was a wonderful and informative afternoon. The Philadelphia Branch thanks both Tony and Dan and the Eagles organization. View photos from the event below!
