DC Branch Celebrates Organization's First Student Chapter
By Adam Newhart, DC Branch Vice President
September 2010
On the last day of summer, the University of Maryland hosted the PGMS DC Branch for a kickoff party celebrating the creation of the nation's first student chapter of PGMS! We were treated to a tour of the new Peace Garden on campus, great tailgate food and tickets to see the Maryland Men's Soccer team record their 1,000 win of program history! Among the attendees were DC Branch members and 25 students/faculty including Dr. Leon Slaughter, associate professor & associate dean of Plant Science & Landscape Architecture. A great time was had by all during the party and networking between the students and DC Branch members really showed what a great organization we are privileged to belong to.
Before we were able have this kickoff party, there was a lot of behind the scenes hard work that took place to make this day possible. The DC Branch serves members in Washington DC, MD and VA and we are grateful to have so many colleges and universities located within 30 minutes of DC. Earlier this year, the idea was proposed to create a student chapter of the DC Branch.
We were extremely fortunate to have the involvement of the University of Maryland prior to creating this chapter because of the faulty involvement in getting students to attend our monthly meetings. At a board meeting earlier this year, we created a committee in conjunction with the faculty of the Institute of Applied Agriculture (IAA), a two year Agriculture program at the University of Maryland, with focus on Golf Course Management, Landscape Management, Ornamental Horticulture, Agribusiness Management and Sports Turf Management to name a few of their majors. The DC Branch had to figure out what steps were needed to make the student chapter a reality.
Many thanks go out to Glori Hyman, acting director of the IAA and Ken Ingram, lecturer & coordinator for Landscape Management & Ornamental Horticulture, who have been truly instrumental in getting this student chapter up and going as well as putting together a student board that has started to hold weekly meetings. From the DC Branch special thanks go out to Michael Gildea, Eric Wenger, Amanda Laudwin, Marie Rojas, Adam Newhart, Mark Feist and Diana Bramble who also had great contributions and input during this process. Mark Feist, DC Branch member and director-at-large for the National PGMS board presented our documents to the National Board Meeting held in Boston earlier this summer and with unanimous approval from the national board they approved the creation of the first student chapter of PGMS!
