PGMS
- Greater Cincinnati Branch: Branch Activities
The
Greater Cincinnati Branch held its spring Branch meeting at the
University of Cincinnati. An extensive walking tour on a beautiful
spring morning was lead by the capable staff of the Facilities -
Grounds, Moving and Transportation Department, including Mary Gratsch,
Manager, Bob Bauer, Assistant Director, Greg Miller, Horticulturist,
and Lonnie Springs, Manager of Athletic Grounds.
The
University of Cincinnati is Ohio's premier urban research university
and traces its origins to 1819. The campus has grown considerably
in size since then and now boasts of a nationally acclaimed blend
of historic and modern architecture and greenspaces.
The
mission of Facilities Management is to provide safe, healthy, and
comfortable services and environments, using service excellence
to support the advancement of the university. The grounds management
team is responsible for over 200 acres of highly developed, highly
used land divided on two urban campus areas. UC's grounds staff
consists of between 40 and 60 employees, including gardeners, horticulturists,
athletic field specialists, irrigation specialists, Certified Arborists,
mowing crews, and equipment operators.
The
tour of UC's campus was one of the Cincinnati Branch's most popular
events recently. Over 40 members and guests attended from as far
away as Wooster, Ohio and Indianapolis, Indiana. Member organizations
attending included: Spring Grove Cemetery, Xavier University, Children's
Hospital, Cedarville University, Cincinnati State and Technical
College, Davey Resource Group, University of Dayton, Paul Brown
Stadium/Bengals, City of Dublin Parks, Ohio State University; JFNew,
Southwest Landmark, and Wooster College.
Everyone
attending the educational program was impressed with the quality
and quantity of ground management work accomplished by UC's crews
and management. It was obvious to all why the University of Cincinnati
is a two time winner of the PGMS Green Star Award.
The
Board and members of the Cincinnati Branch heartily thank Bob, Mary,
Greg and Lonnie for sharing their knowledge, extending their hospitality
by hosting this tour and sponsoring lunch. It was a truly memorable
tour.
