Yew Dell Gardens is a thriving botanical garden with local, national and international reach. With over 1200 members and 250 volunteers, the gardens serve as a major center of gardening, research and education for the greater Louisville region. Collaborative projects and programs have been developed with the American Horticultural Society, Horticulture Magazine, Magnolia Society International, 21st Century Parks, and many others.

Learn about a full analysis of on-site fatal accident reports from the NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) FACE Program from 1990-2005. The class will focus on the hazards and risks that are common to most fatal incidents and how identifying and understanding the factors that lead to fatal injury incidents can improve the safety training, policies and procedures at horticultural business firms in the U.S.

However, without proper management and a tree risk assessment program, they can become one of the landscape's greatest liabilities. With an understanding of the basics of tree risk assessment and how to use diagnostic tools, and developing and implementing a tree risk reduction plan, grounds managers can significantly minimize overall liability, reduce the amount and types of storm damage, and decrease safety risks to the public.

This session covers the latest information on diagnosing and controlling the Top 10 insect and mite pests of woody landscape plants. Management of borers, including emerald ash borer, scale insects, mites, Japanese beetles, bagworms, lace bugs, and other key pests will be emphasized, along with new reduced-risk insecticides and non-chemical control options.
