Stone Mountain Golf Club by Marriott in Stone Mountain, Ga. was the recipient of a Merit Award. The Golf Club (SMGC) is part of the 3,200-acre Stone Mountain Park. The Mountain is the center of an amazing green space and is the backdrop for an award-winning course. The course is an environmental showcase and consists of 340 acres, featuring 36 holes of golf, a practice facility and more. SMGC is a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary and has won numerous green industry awards including a 2006 PGMS Green Star Award, the overall winner of the 2006 GCSAA Environmental Leaders in Golf Award, the 2007 "Because Green Matters" award, the 2009 TurfNet Media Group Superintendent of the Year and the 2010 GCSAA Presidents Award for Environmental Stewardship.

The College of Wooster-Andrew Turf Field in Wooster, Ohio was the recipient of a Merit Award. The campus grounds department oversees 125 acres of main campus and 80 acres of a campus-owned nine-hole golf course. The beauty of the campus is highlighted by more than 3,000 picturesque trees that frame the 90 buildings on campus. The grounds department is also responsible for all of the leaf removal, snow removal, and preparation for commencement, alumni weekend, and other outdoor activities.

UGL Unicco/University of Miami in Coral Gables, Fla.,home to the Superbowl 44 NFC practice field and the 2009 ACC Championship Track Meet, each field is proudly presented to students and visitors alike. In the past two years, there has been a track reconstruction, additions to the baseball stadium and over 20,000 square feet of ground refurbishment.

Disneyland's "Rivers of America Project 2010" was a four-month construction effort where Disneyland grounds crew members recreated the Rivers of America waterway, which encircles Tom Sawyer's Island into four distinct rivers. The rivers include the Mississippi, the Potomac, the Rio Grande and the Columbia. Thousands of shrubs and trees were added to recreate indigenous species of these very different shorelines across America. Props, native Americans and animals were added to the scene to emphasize the themed show overall.

Evergreen Marriott Conference Resort in Stone Mountain, Ga. has many outdoor venues. At the Lakeside Pavilion, guests can experience the fall colors and early morning mist on Stone Mountain Lake. This area is a popular place for weddings, reunions and other special occasions. The Resort has over six miles of nature trails that feature breathtaking wild and plant life.

Graylyn International Conference Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. was presented with an Honor Award. The grounds and gardens were designed by Thomas Sears of Philadelphia and are noted for their open vistas and stately trees. In 1972 the estate was donated to Wake Forest University and restored to its original splendor. The 55 acre property is now used as an executive conference center, boasting 98 private guest rooms and 15 meeting rooms.

Shell Point Retirement Community in Fort Myers, Fla. was the recipient of an Honor Award for its outstanding grounds program. 'Red Flash' Caladiums, 'Striped Beauty' Cannas and impatiens nicely set a welcoming and serene mood throughout the community. The flower beds have been improved by the installation of drip irrigation to reduce water on foliage.

Bonita Bay Butterfly Garden in Bonita Springs, Fla. was the recipient of an Honor Award. Bonita Bay Butterfly Garden is a spectacular place for both visitors and butterflies alike. This 2,400-acre recreation campus is home to a number of sweet-scented flowers and plants that provide nectar for both butterflies and hummingbirds.

Woodfield Country Club in Boca Raton, Fla., is a family-oriented social and recreational full-service private equity country club whose commitment is to create a sense of community amongst its members by providing the highest quality goods, services and facilities for enjoyment at all levels. The amenities include an 18-hole championship golf course, a 20-court tennis complex and expansive lagoon-style swimming pool. The grounds crew members are responsible for interior foliage and floral arrangements, irrigation, pest control, hardscape cleaning, mowing, trimming, plantings and landscape renovations.

rivercreek

River Creek in Leesburg, Va. is a gated homeowners association located along the confluence of Goose Creek and the Potomac River. Due to the fairly young nature of this property, the grounds crew incorporates organic compost into a turf renovation program. Many of the common areas have cherry trees and magnolias that offer wonderful spring color, as well as hundreds of ash trees offer brilliant yellow color in the fall.

Progressive in Mayfield Village, Ohio, is home to several sustainability and special projects that have been installed over the last few years. As part of its sustainability efforts the grounds team reduces the amount of turf to mow by expanding beds around the trees, converting to web-based irrigation controllers, using drip/micro technology to conserve water and taking part in on-site composting of yard waste.

Many visitors enjoy Jacob's Dream memorial park because of its lush, green grounds and welcoming environment. The baptismal pool is used by many to cool off and relax as the water cascades down the face of the limestone fountain. Several forms of plant material are used from trees, shrubs, grasses and groundcovers to help give the landscape beds visual interest.

UNC

UNC-TV's unique programs and public media services provide people of all ages with enriching, life-changing television. The complex, located in a heavily-wooded site in central North Carolina, features 12 landscaped acres. The site provides a peaceful retreat for staff and visitors and encourages a myriad of wildlife. All is accomplished with a small staff on a limited budget that incorporates best practices and utilizes sustainable techniques.

At Wellstar, patients can go, sit and enjoy the water fountains and outdoor foliage found around the campus. In addition to these sitting areas, visitors and guests can also enjoy the Petewood Garden, where events such as weddings are often held because of the beauty of the surroundings.

concord

One of the most notable features of the Concord Hospital campus is the extensive annual program that incorporates mass planting, water features and garden patios that improve the overall atmosphere for healing and is aesthetically pleasing for staff and visitors. New to the campus is a sustainable garden patio area comprised of leftover materials from previous jobs, pavers, granite curbing, stepping stones, wall blocks and assorted donated perennials from staff that were used in the design, as well as old furniture from storage that was cleaned and painted.

Maple Knoll Village in Springdale, Ohio is a campus with 54 acres of colorful perennials, statues and foliage. One of the centerpieces of Maple Knoll Village is in the Millennium Garden, where a Saucer Magnolia provides a stunning welcome back to spring.

smithsonian

Smithsonian Gardens maintains over 180 acres of grounds surrounding 14 museums in D.C. and three major support facilities in Suitland, Md. The Smithsonian campus includes 15 acres of display beds and 48 acres of turf. The remaining acreage consists of buildings and uncultivated natural areas. These public spaces incur constant visitor use that requires continual maintenance in order to provide an excellent experience for the millions of visitors to the Smithsonian Institution each year.

Landscaping has long been used to add beauty and create a welcoming atmosphere at The Christ Hospital. The grounds crew added a new dynamic to its landscaping design—creating landscapes that actually give back to the community. Three completely new garden areas were developed with this in mind, each contributing in its own way to not only beautify the environment, but make it a little better as well.

friezo

The Friezo Residence in New Hope, Pa. was the recipient of a Merit Award. This unique lakefront property consists of a restored farmhouse, converted barn and other structures. Numerous garden rooms and landscape features thoughtfully connect to each other amidst the extensive plantings and lawns on the site.

The Private Residence in Northern Virginia in Leesburg, Va. is a working horse farm and family estate. The total site acreage is around 400 with approximately 36 acres maintained by Blake Landscapes. The owners are environmentally conscious and desired an organic approach to landscape management from the start. A variety of interesting ornamentals and trees constantly change and are a pleasure to work with and view throughout the growing season.
