The Sustainable Sites Initiative: Measuring
Performance in Meeting the Sustainability Challenge |
Kentucky Exposition Center
C-101
|
|
| |
Steve
Windhager, Ph. D.
Significant
parts of the built environment, such as public parks, conversation
areas, private resorts and transportation corridors are not
dominated by structures. The Sustainable Sites Initiative is
an effort to quantitatively describe the attributes of a sustainable
site so that sustainability can be measured in terms of performance
based goals developed to maintain or improve the ecosystem services
provided by a site. The Sustainable Sites Initiative will provide
a basis for measuring, recognizing and verifying sustainable
design, construction and maintenance by creating appropriate
performance targets for site-based resource stewardship. There
are specific credits based on plant selection and site maintenance
which the green industry will be able to help a site achieve,
and may provide new markets and opportunities for the industry.
The U.S. Green Building Council is an active participant and
anticipates incorporating the Sustainable Sites guidelines and
performance benchmarks into future iterations of the LEED (Leadership
in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System.
The Sustainable Sites Initiative is a partnership of the American
Society of Landscape Architects, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower
Center and the US Botanic Garden in conjunction with a diverse
group of stakeholder organizations.

Kevin
Heatley, Vice
President, Biohabitats ISM, Inc.
This
presentation is based upon a workshop I conducted in the Virgin
Islands. It examines the basic biological imperatives that trees
must meet and the simple, pragmatic methodologies that can be
implemented to maximize tree retention. It includes a discussion
of tree value and the need to communicate this value during
the design phase - before construction implementation.

Smart Irrigation Made Simple - Putting
Weather Based Irrigation to Work for You |
Kentucky
Exposition Center
C-101
|
|
| |
Chris
Manchuck, Vice President, Hydro Point Data Systems
Landscapes
consume 58% of urban water, and are typically over-watered by
30-to300%. Add to that, water rates are rising by more than
40% across the US, outpacing energy rate hikes. As drought conditions
grip two-thirds of the country focus is sharpening on outdoor
water use. Public and private sectors alike are being forced
to take a serious look at to reducing landscape water use. Grounds
maintenance professionals who understand how to leverage smart
controllers can gain an important competitive advantage in a
changing market. Attendees will come away from this presentation
understanding how to: * Improve irrigation management best practices,
* Select the right smart controller for any project, * Communicate
the key benefits of smart controllers to their customers, *
Find and secure money-saving rebates, * Prepare for new legislation
and watering restrictions that threaten the green industry.

most importantly, the way to prioritize control when resources
are limited (how to decide what and where to treat first).

Colleges
and universities across the country are rapidly racing to green
their campuses and not necessarily in the sense of landscaping.
While sustainable initiatives were being explored in the early
90's because of the 1991 Waste Reduction Act, campus administrators
are taking a comprehensive approach to integrating sustainable
practices throughout the operation of the institution by supporting
programs in recycling, sustainable purchasing, renewable energy,
and sustainable landscaping practices. This session will focus
on marketing and communication strategies for keeping the customer
informed of priorities and latest industry trends.

of Purpose" and use them to build a great career. People
often walk away from time spent in a event with Jim Paluch inspired

Sustainable Design - A Regional Perspective |

Exposition Center

Roberto
de Leon, De Leon & Primmer Architecture Workshop
Based
in Louisville, Kentucky, De Leon & Primmer Architecture
Workshop has pursued an on-going exploration of sustainable
design strategies rooted in regional building traditional and
site specificity. Often collaborating with civic, cultural and
not-for-profit institutions with challenging budgetary constraints,
the firm has focused on exploring alternative possibilities
for building sustainably within the public realm. This presentation
will highlight a selection of the firm's work through a series
of illustrated case-studies. With a decidedly 'low-tech' design
approach of re-investigating ordinary materials and common building
systems within a regionally specific context, the range of projects
will examine various issues including site/program planning,
cost-efficiency, durability & weathering, and local/regional
conceptual precedents.

Managers and their staff will play a vital role in sustainability
as colleges and universities across the country commit to reducing
their carbon footprint. Research is generating a vast amount
of data and end users are attempting to sort through the information
to gain a general understanding of the requirements necessary
to meet the challenge. Effective leadership will be key in keeping
employees motivated and focused in order to accomplish the goals
of this new paradigm. This session will re-visit basic leadership
principles and assist managers in understanding how to successfully
use these skills in the workplace.

plant production practices in the nursery can alter environmental
impacts and future plant performance in the landscape. Nursery
selection of product mix can affect availability of quality
plants for landscape use. Canopy and root pruning can increase
the rate of establishment and avoid future problems related
to plant structure and aesthetics. The presentation will discuss
current nursery production practices, proposed nursery production
practices and their influence on the environment and the plants
produced for use in the landscape.
