Arizona's Fernando Reyna Earns
CGM Status
(Baltimore,
MD) - The Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) has announced
that Fernando Reyna of Peoria, Ariz. has become the 121st grounds
management professional to successfully complete its Certified Grounds
Manager (CGM) program. PGMS recently spent a few minutes getting
to know Fernando.
PGMS:
How long have you been a PGMS member?
Reyna: I have been a PGMS member
for three years. I was introduced to PGMS by former President ASU
Associate Director Ellen Newell.
PGMS:
What is your current position at work? How long have you been in
that position?
Reyna:
I have served as Grounds Services Manager at Arizona State University
for the past two years, where I have been employed for 19 years.
I manage grounds maintenance crews, waste management crews, recycling
crews, pest management crews, the Volunteer Program, irrigation
and the Perry Rehabilitation crews, while maintaining 450 acres.
PGMS:
Why did you want to become a CGM?
Reyna:
I was introduced to the Professionals of the organization in Louisville,
Kentucky in 2007, where I saw the proud members share, collaborate
and pass onto others, with pride the enormous wealth of information
instrumental in developing new leaders. I was encouraged to join
this highly resourceful group of grounds professionals and accepted
with pride.
PGMS:
What did you think of the CGM program?
Reyna:
The program increased my curiosity and knowledge. I enjoyed putting
together all of the historical notes that were scattered throughout
my files into an operation manual that will be of value to the organization.
It challenged me at every turn to think outside of the box.
PGMS:
What advice do you have for aspiring CGMs?
Reyna:
The best advice I can give new inspiring CGMs is to dig in with
relish and focus on the wealth of information they have gathered
from book knowledge, hands-on experience, the working knowledge
of the past, merged with the lessons provided by the many professionals
that have mentored them are invaluable in developing a new leader.
The course is challenging but with its innovative lessons one gains
a winning spirit.
