PGMS Welcomes New Member Nathan Brown!

Nathan Brown, operations supervisor for the Landscape Services Dept. at Michigan State University

August 2008

PGMS would like to extend a warm welcome to our newest member Nathan M. Brown, operations supervisor for the Landscape Services Dept. at Michigan State University. PGMS recently spent a few minutes getting to know Nathan:

PGMS: What are the areas that you manage?
Brown: I help manage the mowing teams and the gardeners throughout campus. I also help coordinate/assemble resources to accomplish Landscape services to the various properties.

PGMS: How long have you been in the profession?
Brown: I’ve been involved in our profession since 1990, nearly 18 years. I started out working for a local golf course. It is there that I fell in love with Horticulture and Great Designed spaces. I furthered my education at Michigan State University where I earned a B.S. in horticulture with an emphasis in landscape Design in 1999.

PGMS: Why did you join PGMS?
Brown: I feel that the world leaders in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture and Design are within this society. I feel that there is an abundant amount of wisdom to be shared amongst everyone. This information and experiences is what I feel is one of our greatest assets moving forward in today’s challenges. I wanted to be a proactive part of this industry not only to listen and absorb but to share as well.

PGMS: What is the greatest challenge and opportunity for grounds managers?
Brown: The greatest challenge I feel that grounds managers will continue to face is the creativity necessary to solve old problems with new solutions with all the new environmental restrictions and green initiatives. The greatest opportunity I feel grounds managers have is the ability to be the world stewards for how we as societies manage our green spaces.
